What is CBD?
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring compound found in the hemp plant. It is one of over a hundred cannabinoids identified in cannabis, but unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive and does not cause intoxication.
CBD is commonly used as part of everyday wellness routines and is available in several formats, including oils, capsules, creams, and other topical products.
What is CBD oil?
CBD oil is a liquid product that contains cannabidiol extracted from the hemp plant and blended with a carrier oil, such as hemp seed oil or MCT oil. It is typically taken sublingually (under the tongue) and is one of the most widely used forms of CBD.
Is CBD oil legal in the UK?
Yes. CBD oil is legal in the UK provided it meets regulatory requirements. This includes being derived from approved industrial hemp varieties and containing only trace amounts of THC within legal limits.
Nordic Oil CBD products comply with UK and EU regulations and are intended for adult use.
Can CBD make you feel “high”?
No. CBD does not have psychoactive properties and does not produce a “high”. The intoxicating effects associated with cannabis come from THC, not CBD.
What does CBD do?
CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in maintaining balance across various bodily functions. Rather than acting as a stimulant or sedative, CBD is commonly described as supporting balance and general wellbeing.
Individual experiences can vary, and research into CBD is still ongoing.
How long does it take for CBD to work?
The time it takes to notice effects depends on the format used and individual factors such as metabolism and dosage.
- CBD oil (sublingual): often felt within 30–60 minutes
- CBD capsules: may take 1–2 hours
- CBD topicals: localised effects may be noticed after application
Consistency of use is often considered important.
How much CBD oil should I take?
There is no one-size-fits-all dosage for CBD. Many people choose to start with a small amount and gradually adjust based on personal response.
For beginners, some choose to start with a low number of drops taken several times a day. Always follow the guidance on the product label and avoid exceeding the recommended intake. Use our CBD dosage calculator for an estimated recommendation.
If you are unsure, or if you take medication, it is advisable to consult a GP or healthcare professional.
Are there any side effects?
CBD is generally considered well tolerated when used responsibly. Some people may experience mild effects such as:
- drowsiness
- changes in appetite
- digestive discomfort
There is limited data on the long-term effects of CBD use. If you experience any unwanted effects, stop using the product and seek professional advice.
Is CBD safe?
Current evidence suggests that CBD is generally well tolerated in standard amounts. However, as long-term research is still developing, it is important to use CBD responsibly and choose high-quality, well-labelled products.
CBD should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment.
Can CBD interact with medication?
Yes. CBD may affect how certain medications are metabolised, in a similar way to grapefruit juice. If you are taking prescription medication or have a medical condition, consult a healthcare professional before using CBD. Read our guide on common interactions between CBD and medications.
Can you take CBD every day?
Many people choose to include CBD in their daily routine. As with any supplement, consistency and moderation are important. Always follow product guidance and listen to your body’s response.
Can you overdose on CBD?
There is currently no evidence to suggest that CBD causes toxic effects when taken within recommended limits. However, taking more than necessary may increase the likelihood of unwanted effects such as fatigue or digestive discomfort.
What is full-spectrum CBD?
Full-spectrum CBD contains CBD along with other naturally occurring cannabinoids and compounds from the hemp plant, including trace amounts of THC within legal limits.
What is broad-spectrum CBD?
Broad-spectrum CBD contains multiple cannabinoids but has THC removed. This option is often chosen by those who wish to avoid THC entirely.
What is CBD isolate?
CBD isolate is a highly purified form of cannabidiol that contains CBD only, with no other cannabinoids or plant compounds.
How should CBD products be stored?
CBD products should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Always keep products out of reach of children and follow storage instructions on the label.
Can I take CBD with supplements?
CBD is often taken alongside food supplements. However, because interactions can vary depending on ingredients and medications, it is best to seek professional advice if unsure.
Is CBD suitable for everyone?
CBD products are intended for adults only. They are not recommended for children, pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, or anyone advised otherwise by a healthcare professional.
